Biobed Campaign in Latin America and the Caribbean
A Swedish Innovation
for Safer Pesticide Handling
The biobed is an inexpensive, simple and efficient innovation that can minimize environmental contamination when using pesticides. It was developed by Swedish researchers and farmers and has thereafter been adopted in many countries in Europe, adapted to the local needs and often renamed. In 2013 there were about 5 000 biobeds in this region.
Because of its flexibility, the biobed can be used in small, medium and large agriculture and are spreading to other parts of the world such as China and Latin America. Currently it is estimated that there are about 2 000 biobeds in Latin America, mainly in Guatemala and Chile. RISE Agrifood and Bioscience (former JTI – Swedish Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering) is contributing actively in this diffusion work.
The biobed was developed by researchers and farmers in Sweden over 20 years ago. Then, JTI – Swedish Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, initiated a campaign to spread this technology in Latin America and the Caribbean. This was done in cooperation with the regional office of United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC FAO). The project was financed by The Swedish Research Council Formas.
The aim of the campaign was to provide basic information on the biobed to farmers, technicians and authorities and to promote its use. It has been observed that the unsatisfactory management of pesticides and other chemicals can give rise to residues in soil and waters, with harmful effects on public health and the environment. The biobed is a technology used to minimize such pollution. This web site was constructed to summarize and disseminate the results of the campaign.
